Tips: Auto detect listens for both languages at once. If it keeps guessing wrong in a noisy room, tap "English only" or "සිංහල පමණයි" before each person speaks. The microphone pauses itself while a translation is playing so it never translates its own voice.
Long distance calls: instead of WhatsApp, both sides open Paalama, pick "Long distance", type the SAME room name (for example FAMILY) and the SAME 4-digit PIN (for example 1234), choose the language they speak, and press Start call. The PIN keeps strangers out: a phone with the wrong PIN never reaches your room. Everything said appears on both phones and is spoken aloud on the other side in that person's language.
If you cannot hear anything: turn the volume up, and on iPhone check the orange silent switch on the side of the phone. If a "Tap to hear" message appears, tap it once and sound will flow from then on.
